Abstract With nuclear power accounting for almost one-fifth of the electricity Americans consume, the U.S. nuclear industry has come a long way since the days of Three Mile Island and 'The China Syndrome.' Indeed, the 102 gigawatts (GW) of energy that U.S. nuclear plants produce exceeds the generation of the world's closest competitor, France, by almost one-third. This leading position comes despite the fact that the last nuclear power plant in the U.S. started commercial operations in 1996.
