Abstract
Ratings activity in the U.S. investor-owned utility industry was relatively quiet during the first quarter of 2007. Since the year began, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services raised the corporate credit ratings of seven holding companies and operating subsidiaries (three of which related to a single entity, Progress Energy Inc. and its units) and lowered three corporate credit ratings, all related to TXU Corp. (see chart 1). The past three months witnessed few, but mixed, CreditWatch placements and outlook revisions. The few CreditWatch listings and outlook revisions can be traced to event risk, such as mergers and acquisitions and the sale of noncore operations.
