Abstract
The environment for U.S. health care companies continues to be characterized by generally sustained demand for essential medical goods and services, the absence of broad-based pricing weakness, and capital structure enhancements. Standard & Poor's Ratings Services believes these still-benign health care conditions mean credit actions for U.S. companies through much of 2011 should continue to have a positive bias, after a year that so far has conformed to our expectations that the weak economy and health reform would have only limited near-term effects on industry participants in 2010. We believe generally well-maintained operating margins relate to leaner company operations, which have muted the effect of soft volume tied to the recessionary economic malaise.
