Abstract The Norwegian banking industry is presently operating in a benign economic environment, despite a slowdown in economic growth in 1998. Norway managed to avoid a hard landing in 1999 when oil prices soared from record lows to record highs and, although economic growth slowed, optimism amongst consumers helped support domestic demand. In 1999, all the leading banks reported healthy profits and stable lending margins. Profitability is stable and is supported by high asset quality and normalized provisioning needs. Capitalization of leading Norwegian banks is high compared with that of regional peers. The banking market is less concentrated and consolidation in the industry is lagging behind that of regional peers in Sweden and Finland, despite some smaller transactions in 1999.
