Abstract
Most sectors of the U.S. health care industry continue to exhibit resilience amid a lethargic economy. Standard & Poor's economic forecast indicates a moderate economic recovery based on GDP growth, but with only a minimal decline in still-high unemployment. Consequent sluggish hospital admissions and physician visits, and close scrutiny of the pricing of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other health care products are likely to persist. Overwhelmingly, however, third-party funding of essential care and continued high margins for patented medical treatments largely shelter many industry participants from these headwinds.
