[Editor's Note: This article, originally published July 14, 2005, is being republished to clarify in Table 4 the amounts of commercial paper listed.] After a prolonged hiatus, U.S. commercial paper outstanding is expected to maintain its rebound as interest rates rise and the demand for funding increases. Total commercial paper outstanding rose 9.7% last year and is expected to climb 9.3% this year, after three down years. Growth will be recorded in both the financial and nonfinancial segments this year, with the latter posting stronger gains albeit from a lower base. Outstandings in financial commercial paper are mostly driven by requirements for bank lending.
