Abstract
Water supply has become more of a concern for many U.S. water and sewer utilities in the past few years, especially those in the Southeast, California, the Pacific Northwest, the Rocky Mountain states, and Texas. Long-term concerns about existing water supplies are even greater because of urban sprawl and population growth, competition between agriculture and municipal-industrial customers for consumption, finite groundwater quality and quantity, and climate change. Standard & Poor's Ratings Services believes public water utilities will take the necessary steps to meet these challenges and ensure operational and financial compliance while minimizing the risks to achieve this goal.
