Abstract In Standard&Poor's view, the Chilean banking system is the strongest in Latin America and amont the stronges in the emerging markets. This assessment is due to rigorous supervision, good overall asset quality, increasing sophistication and a history of systemic support. The system is also bolstered by Chile's well-developed domestic capital markets. Yet despite these positive factors, the system continues to be burdened by deuda subordinada (remnant claims on banks' profits from the 1980s banking crisis), by rapid loan growth, and by restricted access to international capital markets. The Chilean banking system comprises 14 domestic and 17 foreign banks and 3 finance companies. Up until 1973, when the military seized the government, the majority of the nation's banks were government owned....
