Growth of the Data Centre Market to Drive Demand for Fire Detection and Suppression in South Africa

The data centres market in South Africa is growing rapidly, with managed hosting growing at approximately 16 per cent in 2009. Existing data centres span many thousands of square meters and are constantly being upgraded. Key data centre service providers also plan to construct more premises between 2010 and 2016, thereby increasing capacity. Data centres house and transmit valuable information, along with sensitive equipment that are often unable to be shutdown. As the awareness of the necessity of fire protection within the data centre market rises, these unique requirements will drive demand for advanced detection and suppression equipment.

Fire strategies within the data centre market should be focused on the protection of high-value assets and important operations. A key factor driving fire detection and suppression demand within data centres is the need for the seamless integration of detection and suppression equipment. “The time lapse between these operations, particularly within mission critical facilities, is a paramount factor when controlling a developing fire,” notes the analyst of this research. “Effective and reliable fire protection is thus critical for minimising downtime and associated data and financial losses.”

Despite being imperative in any building’s design, end users are typically inclined to spend as little as possible on fire detection and suppression. Most end users are only eager to meet minimum regulatory requirements and prevent damage in lives and property, without extending their budgets. This restrains revenues attributable to fire detection and suppression equipment and, ultimately, the development and growth of the market. Within the IT and telecommunications industry, an estimated 4 per cent of budgets is spent on security measures. Fire detection and suppression receives only a small portion of this already-reduced investment. The South African market has an abundance of products that have modern and enhanced capabilities, but these products do not find wide acceptance among end users. Most customers still tend to opt for devices that fulfil minimum requirements, whilst complying with requisite standards, in order to reduce expenditures.

“Despite the weakened economy and the low level of expenditure on fire detection and suppression within the IT and telecommunications industry, the growing market for data centres should fast-track demand for new fire detection and suppression installations in the near future,” says the analyst. “Companies seeking to reduce costs are increasingly outsourcing their IT requirements to data centre service providers.” A number of these service providers plan to expand their capacity in the near future, in order to meet this growing demand. Thus, the upgrading of many existing data centres, in addition to the construction of new premises to meet the rising demand for outsourced IT services, will stimulate demand for new fire detection and suppression installations.
