Abstract
During fourth-quarter 2010, credit continued to flow into finance companies, strengthening their balance sheets and leading managers to begin thinking more of offense than of defense. Post-crisis industry structures have begun to settle in residential mortgage servicing, auto lending, student lending, and commercial real estate (CRE). Commercial lending by banks and business-development companies has picked up, but the three remaining major commercial lenders in the finance company space (General Electric Capital Corp., CIT Group Inc., and CapitalSource Inc.) continued to shrink their balance sheets in the fourth quarter.
