Weakening Profitability Still A Risk For Japan's Regional Banks In 1H FY2010 Dec 10

The 16 regional banks rated by Standard & Poor's Ratings Services had a total net income of -140.9 billion in the first half of fiscal 2010 (April 1, to Sept. 30, 2010), marking a 30% increase from the same period a year earlier as credit costs declined. (All the figures in this commentary are the aggregates or the weighted averages of the 16 rated regional banks, unless otherwise specified.) The consolidated "core" net operating profits (net operating profit before gains/losses from securities), which indicate underlying profitability, fell 4% year on year to -296.7 billion.
