Japan's Six Major Banking Groups Improved Performance In Fiscal 2010, But Profitability Remained Low, Says S&P Report May 11

Abstract
TOKYO (Standard & Poor's) May 23, 2011--The performance of Japan's six major banking groups rated by Standard & Poor's Ratings Services improved in fiscal 2010 (ended March 31, 2011) from a relatively weak fiscal 2009, Standard & Poor's said in a report published today. The consolidated net profits of the six groups jumped over 50%. However, their profitability remained modest with ROA (return on assets) at 0.3%. The current loan loss provision level provides a limited buffer for them to deal with potentially more unexpected impact from the earthquake that hit on March 11. For their fiscal 2010 results, the major banking groups only recognized limited direct impact from the earthquake largely because direct exposure to the damaged Tohoku region...
