Abstract
In third-quarter 2005, U.S. finance companies were caught between countervailing influences of a strengthening economy with improving employment on one side and a flat yield curve with loan markets awash with liquidity on the other. As a result of Hurricane Katrina, American General Finance Corp. added $56 million in provisions; Capital One Financial Corp. (which is in the process of merging with New Orleans-based Hibernia Corp.) allocated $44 million; AmeriCredit Corp. had $8 million in Katrina-related charges; and Dollar Financial (which had nine stores in and around New Orleans) estimated losses at only $0.7 million.
