Abstract
Rating actions on North American chemical companies were strongly positive in first-quarter 2010 as improving operating results, prospects for a sustained economic recovery, and speculative-grade issuers' stronger access to the capital markets boosted credit quality in the sector. Prudent financial policies also helped stabilize credit metrics for these companies as the industry worked through the recent recession, and lower cost structures are supporting healthy profit margins--which is key now that volumes are strengthening.
