Bulletin: Mladic Arrest Contributes To Serbia's EU Integration Prospects And Underpins Sovereign Ratings May 11

Abstract LONDON (Standard & Poor's) May 26, 2011--Standard & Poor's Ratings Services said today that the arrest of the highest-ranking Yugoslav war crimes suspect still at large, Ratko Mladic, and his expected transfer to the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, has no immediate effect on the ratings and outlook on the Republic of Serbia (BB/Stable/B). Nevertheless, it represents a major positive step for Serbia's further EU integration and underpins the sovereign ratings on Serbia, in our view. As a result, we expect Serbia to become an EU candidate country by 2012. The improved political situation in Serbia under the current government in our view also reflects the emergence of a political consensus supportive of European integration, which we expect...
