Abstract MADRID (Standard & Poor's) Nov. 8, 2007--Standard & Poor's Ratings Services said today that the developing political situation in the Government of Georgia (B+/Positive/B) would currently have no near-term effect on either its ratings or outlook on the sovereign. 'The increased cohesion within the previously weak and fragmented opposition, following the arrest of former Defence Minister Irakli Okruashvili, had already been factored into the ratings,' said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Trevor Cullinan. 'Nevertheless, the government's forcible dispersion on November 7 of an opposition rally, which had been calling for President Mikheil Saakashvili's dismissal from office, highlights an acceleration in the domestic challenges that the government needs to manage alongside significant geopolitical risks.'
