Abstract The creditworthiness of the Omani banks is supported by the following strengths: Adequate capitalization and profitability; Consolidation of the banking sector; Improved regulatory supervision; and Strong track record of institutional support. Partly offsetting these strengths are the following constraints: Relatively weak funding profile by Gulf standards; Lending concentrations arising out of an undiversified economy; Concerns over banks' asset quality, Large proportion of consumer lending to the highly leveraged personal sector; Limited banking opportunities in the corporate private sector coupled with the small size of the banks; and The system's relatively weak track record of financial stability, as accidents were recurrent over the last decade.
