North American Personal Emergency Response Systems Market
Frost & Sullivan, May 2011, Pages: 51
This study covers the North American personal emergency response systems (PERS) market, examining the drivers and restraints, pricing, technology, reimbursement, and demand trends. The total market growth is forecasted. In addition, an in-depth analysis of the convergence of this market with telehealth is provided. The base year is 2010, and forecasts are made until 2017.
Introduction and Scope
The scope of this research service includes health monitoring services that involve the notification of authorities after a health-related event, which are commonly referred to as personal emergency response services.
The most basic personal emergency response systems/services (PERS) consist of a pendant or other type of button notification device and a base station receiver in the home with a call center component managing the transmitted events. These systems have been in existence for over 30 years, and many current products remain similar to this original idea. Technological progression has occurred but at a slow rate. A recent innovation was the addition of fall detection technologies imbedded in these systems. The market is dominated by direct-to-customer service relationships similar to home security systems, with limited direct equipment sales. Recently, this market has been receiving high attention as it is one of the few markets involving healthcare-related services that provide direct-to-consumer services.
While this market is established and mature, it has witnessed more innovation over the past several years in terms of applying the PERS business model to more intense healthcare applications. Additional insight and analysis has been given specifically to these emerging opportunities.
Market Overview
The aging population is at the forefront of discussions about the future of healthcare. However, discussions are much more limited, concerning how to involve and enable the general population to help overcome the current healthcare issues. The PERS market has, for years, provided a health monitoring service for the elderly paid by the consumers directly. However, these traditional systems are simplistic in nature, and they provide little in the form of actual prevention and life management. As the market continues to evolve, more tiers of products are likely to be offered, with the evolution from traditional simple PERS to more advanced healthcare preventative systems.
For the purpose of this study, PERS include those products and services provided to the customer or consumer and the revenues generated from this exchange. It includes installation fees, equipment fees, and service/monthly fees. Other peripheral markets such as medication dispensing systems and some mobility monitoring are not included in quantitative forecasts.
