The Battle for Europe's pay TV markets

This is a battle which so far is hot only in France, and maybe in one or two hotspots like Romania and Poland – for the rest of Europe there is a lull before the storm as operators gather up the low hanging fruit. But in these hot-spots there are price wars, a bewildering variety of bundles of TV, Broadband, fixed and mobile voice, taking in pre-paid, post-paid or pay as you go combinations. The rest of Europe has all this in store.

But across Europe all pay TV players are getting ready for war – for cable that's transforming more of its lines to digital and fast broadband, for satellite it's trying to buy ISP lines for a return path and for IPTV it's about accommodating HD and getting ready for 3D.

Prices and ARPU remain high in cable dominated countries, but where the technologies are all present, markets will be eroded by price wars, triple play discounts and special offers. This will spread across Europe like wildfire.

Rethink Technology Research has examined the strategy of over 120 pay TV operators, ARPU and growth rates, strategic initiatives, and technology partnerships. We show and predicted technology and operator breakdowns in 27 European territories, taking in 121 million pay TV homes today, rising to 145 million by the end of 2014.
