Sovereign Upgrades Set Record in 2004 Feb 05

Abstract

Sovereign upgrades continued to outpace sovereign downgrades by a wide margin in the fourth quarter of 2004. As a result, upgrades of sovereigns as a percentage of total sovereign ratings for 2004 reached 27%, a record for a calendar year. Looking forward, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services expects sovereign upgrades to continue to lead sovereign downgrades, at least for the first half of 2005. Standard & Poor's raised its ratings on eight central government ratings in the fourth quarter.
