BULLETIN: Swedish Government Investigates Electricity Market Competition Aug 01

Abstract Standard & Poor's said today that it will take no rating action in response to yesterday's announcement that the Swedish government (Kingdom of Sweden; local currency: AAA/Stable/A-1+; foreign currency: AA+/Positive/A-1+) will investigate competitive behavior in the domestic electricity market following increased electricity prices in 2001. Standard & Poor's considers that the 2001 price increases reflect the demand and supply situation in the market. After several consecutive years of wet and mild weather, precipitation levels and temperatures have returned to normal. Profitability is improving from unsustainably low levels, as the destructive, market-share focused competition is easing.
