Victrelis (boceprevir) - First-in-Class Oral Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Protease Inhibitor Approved in The US and Telaprevir to Follow

Summary

Hepatitis C is caused by a type of virus called hepatitis C virus (HCV). The virus infects the liver, causing severe inflammation and leading to long term complications such as cirrhosis, liver cancer and even death. Currently, there is no vaccine available for the prevention of hepatitis C and there is no specific treatment available for the treatment of acute HCV infection.

Scope

- Victrelis (boceprevir) is the first protease inhibitor to be approved in the US, on May 13, 2011. It is under priority review in the European Union with EMEA and its approval is expected in June 2011. Apart from Victrelis, a second protease inhibitor telaprevir is also under priority review by the FDA and EMEA. On May 3, 2011, the FDA Committee recommended by a vote of 18-0 the approval of telaprevir for those who were not treated previously and those who were treated previously but not cured with currently available medicines. The FDA is expected to approve telaprevir by the end of May, 2011.
