France currently has a total installed capacity of 123,001 MW and installed nuclear capacity of 62,220 MW. France currently has 58 operating nuclear reactors and one under construction reactor and one reactor is in the planning phase, expected to start its construction by 2012. The nuclear contribution is about 75% to the total electricity generation in France. Electricite de France (EdF) is the key player in the France nuclear energy industry. The commercial operating nuclear reactors in the country are of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) type and the two upcoming reactors are of European Pressurized Reactor (EPR) type. The electricity demand is mainly met through nuclear, hydro and thermal. France has been very active in developing the reactor technology and exports reactors, fuel products and services. The nuclear policy of the country focuses mainly on nuclear installations, protection against radiation, radioactive waste management and third party liability in case of nuclear accidents. The nuclear energy utilization in the country for electricity production has aided the country to cut down greenhouse gas emissions.
