Ariella and Brad share inside views of municipal energy and carbon management strategy, including implementation methods and software tools for reaching reduction goals. Jennifer Ewing Thiel, director of tools and technical innovation at ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability USA, describes the elements of a successful municipal carbon and energy reduction program, and related drivers and trends across municipalities in the United States. Jaclyn Pitera, a senior analyst with AltaTerra Research, provides an overview of the marketplace for environmental resource management systems, representative capabilities, and how these are being deployed as a 'system of record' in enterprise sustainability programs.
2. Solutions for Sustainable Cities: Renewable Energy Program Successes and Challenges
In this online briefing, Jeff Janssen, senior policy advisor at the City of San Jose, discusses how the city’s solar goals fit into the larger picture of local economic development and job creation. Mary Tucker, energy program manager at the City of San Jose, provides detailed information on how the city is installing solar on city buildings and encouraging adoption throughout the community, including initiatives to foster corporate employee solar purchase programs and innovative community financing models. 3. Solutions for Sustainable Cities: Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Planning and Deployment
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are receiving a great deal of attention in the media, but before they can be broadly adopted, a charging infrastructure needs to be in place. This online briefing reviews the decision-making process for municipalities interested in EV infrastructure. It begins with a discussion of regional transportation strategies and how individual cities can help support long-term sustainable goals. Anne Hunt, environmental policy director for the City of St. Paul, Minnesota, discusses the business case for municipal investment in EV infrastructure, including stakeholder buy-in and funding strategies. She is joined by St. Paul Senior Planner Merritt Clapp-Smith, who discusses practical steps for implementation, including urban planning issues, developing utility partnerships, and developing supporting permitting processes. Reiko Takemasa, senior product manager at utility Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), discusses the impact of PEV charging infrastructure on the utility electric grid, the use of rates to influence charging behavior, how utilities will respond to PEVs, and other related issues, such as problems with clustering phenomena and challenges of installing chargers at multi-unit dwelling complexes. The briefing is moderated by Don Bray, president of AltaTerra Research, who gives a brief overview of EV technology and trends.
