Ankylosing Spondylitis: Surveyed Rheumatologists Await Non-TNF-Alpha Inhibitor Therapies in an Underserved Market
Decision Resources, Inc, June 2011
AS remains a significantly underserved market, despite the major impact that TNF-a inhibitors have had on the treatment of the disease. A significant percentage of the AS patients treated by 50 U.S. rheumatologists surveyed by Decision Resources in February 2011 are TNF-a inhibitor-refractory; these patients need alternative therapies. Therefore, the AS market still offers much opportunity to companies developing drugs with novel mechanisms of action.
Questions answered in this report:
- Diagnostic criteria for AS have evolved with researchers’ and physicians’ understanding of the disease. What are the new ASAS criteria for diagnosing AS? What criteria do rheumatologists most commonly use when making an AS diagnosis?
- Although TNF-a inhibitors have become a mainstay of AS treatment, they are not often the first-line treatment. What drugs to physicians currently prescribe as first-line AS treatments? What reasons do they cite for not prescribing TNF-a inhibitors as first-line therapies?
- Four out of five of the TNF-a inhibitors on the market are FDA-approved for the treatment of AS. Which TNF-a inhibitors do rheumatologists believe are the most efficacious? The safest? The easiest for which reimbursement can be obtained?
- Despite the efficacy and safety of TNF-a inhibitors in a large percentage of AS patients, a significant percentage of patients are refractory to such treatments and in need of alternatives. What companies are developing agents with different mechanisms of action for AS? What are the emerging agents’ targets?
