Standard & Poor's Ratings Services rated $2.73 billion of funding-agreement-backed notes in the third quarter of 2009, which brings total issuance so far this year to $5.08 billion (see the chart). Only two companies--Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., which issued four notes totaling $2.43 billion, and MassMutual Life Insurance Co., which issued one note for $300 million--were active in the market. In the third quarter, there was $377 million of redemptions, bringing the year-to-date total to $4.877 billion. It is important to note that the redemptions were not required by the transaction documents, rather the companies chose to redeem those notes based on current market fundamentals.
