BellSouth Corp.'s and BellSouth Telecom's ?AAA' Ratings Are Under Pressure Oct 99

Abstract Atlanta, Ga.-based BellSouth Corp. has steadfastly remained the last of the seven original regional Bell operating companies (RBOCs) to be unaffiliated, either with another RBOC or a national, facilities-based long-distance carrier. However, amid mounting competitive pressures and a frenzy of merger activity in the telecommunications industry, BellSouth recently joined the fray with its bid for Sprint Corp., an offer that was ultimately bested by MCI WorldCom Inc. several weeks ago. Although terms of the failed BellSouth proposal remain publicly undisclosed, the company's willingness to merge with the 'BBB+' rated Sprint underscores its increasingly aggressive appetite for acquisitions to expand its geographic footprint and bundled telecommunications services capabilities. This strategy arguably could improve the company's longer-term business position in competitive markets....
