Ameren and Units Ratings Placed on CreditWatch Negative After Acquisition Announcement Feb 04

Abstract NEW YORK (Standard & Poor's) Feb. 3, 2004--Standard & Poor's Ratings Services said today that it placed its 'A-' long-term corporate credit ratings on utility holding company Ameren Corp. and its subsidiaries, Union Electric Co., Central Illinois Public Service Co., CILCORP Inc., Central Illinois Light Co., and AmerenEnergy Generating Co. on CreditWatch with negative implications. The 'A-2' short-term corporate credit and commercial paper ratings were not placed on CreditWatch. At the same time, Standard & Poor's placed its 'B' corporate credit rating on Illinois Power Co., whose credit profile is much weaker that that of Ameren, on CreditWatch with positive implications (see media release on Illinois Power).
