Alcatel Long Term Ratings Placed on CreditWatch Negative After Profit Warning Sep 02

Abstract
LONDON (Standard & Poor's) Sept. 23, 2002--Standard & Poor's Ratings Services said today it placed its double-'B'-plus corporate credit and senior unsecured debt ratings on France-based telecommunications equipment provider Alcatel on CreditWatch with negative implications, following a profits warning by the company on Sept. 20, 2002. At the same time, the single-'B' short-term corporate credit rating on the company was affirmed. 'The CreditWatch placement on Alcatel reflects a further severe deterioration of market conditions within the global telecoms equipment industry beyond previous expectations, and the continuing lack of trading visibility,' said Leandro de Torres Zabala, a director of Standard & Poor's Corporate Ratings Europe.
