Abstract For more than two and a half years, the U.S. life insurance sector has endured somewhat weak credit quality, and it continues to do so--now largely as a result of an uncertain economic recovery. Standard & Poor's Ratings Services revised its outlook on this group to negative in October 2008, predominately as a result of the steep economic downturn and its effect on life insurers' earnings, investments, and capital. And we are maintaining our negative outlook based on our expectation that downgrades will continue through the second half of 2010, even as the overall industry should continue to improve its capital adequacy and earnings.
