Abstract For years, proponents have predicted the advent of digital cinema, which is now beginning to be a reality. Digital technology is making its debut in the motion picture exhibition industry, with productivity benefits for theater chains and opportunities to harness advertising and three-dimensional (3D) film technology. Digital projection and 3D technology both promise advances in the quality of the theater-going experience. Cost savings and higher yields from theatrical releases should accrue to Hollywood studios. However, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services does not view digital cinema as a makeover or panacea for the industry.
