U.S. Life Insurance 2011 Outlook: Back To Stable, But Competition Remains Tough And Interest Rates Are Low Dec 10

Abstract Stronger balance sheets, recovering financial markets, and somewhat less-risky liability profiles are improving U.S. life insurers' credit profiles. As a result, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services is revising its outlook on the sector to stable from negative. Our outlook had been negative since October 2008, predominately because of the steep economic downturn and the strain it put on life insurers' earnings, investments, and capital. As we expected, the pace of downgrades slowed during 2010. We lowered our ratings on 16 life insurers through Nov. 15, 2010, compared with 28 during the same period in 2009 (see chart 1). The outlook distribution also has improved, with 26% of life insurers with negative outlooks or ratings on CreditWatch negative as of Nov....
