BNP Paribas established 100% ownership of BancWest Corp. on Dec. 21, 2001. The ratings also reflect the fact that BancWest Corp. is viewed as a strategically important subsidiary of BNP Paribas, operating as its primary U.S.-based banking group. California-based BancWest Corp. operates with $34.3 billion of total assets as of Sept. 30, 2002, and its primary bank subsidiaries are San Francisco, Calif.-based Bank of the West and Honolulu, Hawaii-based First Hawaiian Bank.
