Alcatel's 'A'/'A-1' Rtgs Affirmed; Outlk Remains Stable; Thomson Still on Watch Developing Jul 99

Abstract PARIS (Standard & Poor's CreditWire) July 30, 1999--Standard & Poor's today affirmed its ratings on Alcatel S.A. (Alcatel) and related entities. The outlook remains stable. The ratings on Thomson S.A. and related entities remain on CreditWatch, where they were placed with developing implications on July 31, 1998. (See list below for all rating actions.) The rating decisions followed the July 29, 1999, announcement that Alcatel will dispose of a significant portion of its 44% stake in the French nuclear-equipment manufacturer, Framatome, in exchange for an approximate 10% increase in its previous 15.8% stake in the French defense group, Thomson CSF (CSF). Thomson S.A., CSF's largest shareholder, will see its stake in CSF decrease to about 30% from the current 40%....
