Abstract NY -- Standard & Poor's CreditWire 7/1/97 -- Standard & Poor's today has lowered its ratings of Alcatel Alsthom S.A. (Alcatel) and its subsidiaries (see list below). These ratings have been removed from CreditWatch, where they were placed with negative implications in March 1997. The long-term ratings outlook is stable. The downgrade reflects the challenges that the company faces to sufficiently improve its operating earnings and cash flow generation in a highly competitive market environment. Standard & Poor's does not expect Alcatel's medium-term financial profile to remain compatible with previous ratings. In 1996, recurring operating earnings before net gains on disposals, interests, and taxes, but after goodwill amortization, though improving, remained in the red, at a negative French franc (FFr)...
