Abstract
The S&P 500 Index's telecommunication services sector could be on track to recover after suffering during the economic downturn that began mid-2007. The sector's aggregated recorded earnings declined from second-quarter 2008 to fourth-quarter 2009, according to Capital IQ data (see chart 1). Since then, however, the sector has posted year-over-year earnings growth following an overall upward trend. Major sector company Verizon, for example, showed solid operational improvement in terms of cash flow growth, margins, and revenue, in its quarterly report released earlier in the reporting season. Analysts expect $2.04 per share for second-quarter 2010, which would maintain earnings at the same level recorded throughout the past year, and forecast a return to increasing earnings in fourth-quarter 2010 and throughout 2011....
