Abstract
The S&P 500 Index's telecommunications services sector price index has risen just 23% since September 1989 (see chart), which is just a fraction of the gains made by some of the better performing sector indices such as health care (465%), energy (418%) and information technology (411%). Utilities, the sector price index with the second worst performance, has appreciated 59% since September 1989. During late 1999 and early 2000 the technology and telecom sectors of the stock market became synonymous with a period of time that was later to become known as the internet "bubble."
