Clinical diagnosis represents a time-consuming process, involving a wide array of processes, ranging from obtaining samples to the final reporting. Given the continued decline in government reimbursement rates for laboratory testing, cost-cutting measures adopted by the managed care industry, and the general shift towards cutting healthcare costs, clinical diagnostics laboratories are exploring ways to improve productivity with smaller budgets. Given this backdrop, several clinical diagnostics laboratories are increasingly adopting laboratory automation systems in order to tackle the problems associated with an increase in volume for diagnostic tests, decreasing reimbursement rates, and a diminished labor pool. The contribution of lab automation to the clinical diagnostics industry continues to expand, with the entry of more suppliers into the market with increased automation options. The technology enables simple and efficient workflow, resulting in an increased productivity, with minimum hands-on interaction. Besides, automation has become a major differentiating factor in a market characterized by intensified competition, and has emerged as an important means of survival for clinical laboratories.
The US represents the single largest market for clinical diagnostics automation worldwide, as stated by the new market research report on Clinical Diagnostics Automation. Europe represents the second largest market for clinical diagnostics automation. Driven primarily by the need to attain cost efficiencies, the European market for clinical diagnostics automation is witnessing growing investments in pre- and post-analytical clinical diagnostic processes. The market, however, faces few challenges, such as declining reimbursements for vendors, lack of standardized assays, and falling prices. Going forwards, the European market for laboratory automation systems is expected to be primarily driven by miniaturization. Miniaturization is likely to affect equipment's design, which in turn would lead to the development of sensitive and small analyzers, low volume liquid handlers, extra intelligent process control software, and high-definition plate formats. Market growth for clinical diagnostics automation, however, is expected to emanate mainly from the developing regions, driven primarily by the burgeoning population in Asia.
The global market for clinical diagnostics automation is led by automated clinical analyzers. Automation is expected to increasingly move towards handheld devices used in Point-Of-Care (POC) testing, given the rise in outpatient healthcare and homecare markets. Physicians opting for point-of-care testing are increasingly focusing on the use of small, handheld analyzers for tests, such as electrolytes, hematology, and glucose testing. Stand-alone automation represents the fastest growing segment in the global clinical diagnostics automation market, with a projected CAGR of 16.8% during the analysis period. Total Lab Automation (TLA) is considered to be the most comprehensive laboratory automation approach. It provides a higher level of integration and work consolidation in laboratories, and enables the testing of a wider variety of samples as compared to the stand-alone automation. However, TLA installation involves huge costs and consumes considerable time for small and medium sized laboratories, and is mostly ideal for use in large hospitals with 550 beds or more, or with a substantially large outpatient numbers. Adoption of TLA remains confined to only a few large hospitals, serving a niche market.
In the upcoming years, demand for automation solutions in clinical laboratories would gain from driving factors that emerge from the end-user life science industry as well as from the technological aspects of automation technology. While pharmaceutical companies continue to vie for increased efficiency and cost effectives, the biotech industry places substantial demand for new solutions in the backdrop of proteomics and genomics initiatives embarked by the sector. End-use sectors are expected to create substantial demand for automation solutions in a bid to realize enhanced data handling and higher throughput. Yet another major driver would be the increasing emphasis on ability to work with smaller material quantities. On the other side, advancements in aspects such as enhanced communication bandwidth, memory growth and processing power are expected to benefit technical aspects of automation solutions, in turn driving their demand. These improvisations are expected to deliver enhanced data collection, and their movement as well as sharing.
