Battery technologies such as alkaline, nickel-cadmium (NiCad) and nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) traditionally dominated the global batteries market. As the industry evolved, a new technology, lithium-ion batteries, came into the fore promising better performance and durability than traditional varieties. However, this technology had to face several operational challenges early on, especially with regard to high prices, and a ‘battery chemistry’ that threatened to cause overheating, and even fire. This led major battery manufacturers to work on developing an alternative battery technology capable of addressing issues such as those associated with lithium-ion chemistry. Manufacturers’ efforts finally resulted in development of advanced yet simple and low-cost battery technology in the form of zinc-air batteries.
An emerging battery technology, Zinc-air batteries generate power from the reaction of zinc and oxygen in the atmosphere. Capable of providing greater storage capacity than lithium-ion batteries, Zinc-air batteries enhance the utility and reliability of electrical appliances and therefore soon started to gain widespread acceptance among consumers. Enviable features such as lightweight, eco-friendly, durable, non-toxic and an ability to provide high energy-density have transformed Zinc-air batteries into a favorable option among consumers in various end-use segments such as medical devices, electronics, automotives, and military.
During the 2007-2009 world economic recession, the global Zinc-Air Batteries market fared relatively better than other industry segments. Continued steady demand for electronic and communication devices used in critical end-use application segments such as hearing aids and defense, and growing focus on convenient, environmental friendly and cost saving electronic technologies such as electric cars, and portable electronic devices especially helped sustain demand in the global batteries market, including zinc-air batteries during the period. Post recession recovery was aided by resurgence in adoption of popular products such as MP3 Players, laptops, and other handheld electronic devices such as mobile phones and PDAs. Developing markets in Asia-Pacific, particularly China and India, posted strong growth.
In the upcoming years, growth will be driven by expanding opportunities in relatively new application areas, including battery operated medical equipment such as defibrillators, infrared ear thermometers, pacemakers, blood pressure monitors, and infusion pumps as well as consumer products such as cellular phones, camcorders, and PDAs. Technology developments aimed at producing batteries that are highly durable, deliver optimum power and are competitive priced will also help zinc-air batteries market find new opportunities in the short to medium term period.
As stated by the new market research report on Zinc-Air Batteries, Europe represents the largest regional market worldwide. Asia-Pacific on the other hand, is forecast to emerge as the fastest growing regional market for zinc-air batteries with dollar sales from the region projected to wax at a CAGR of about 6.7% over the analysis period. By end-use segment, hearing aids represents the largest contributor to the global zinc-air batteries market. Aging population and resulting increase in demand for hearing aids among senior citizens, and constant changes in design and size of hearing aid devices will drive demand for new zinc-air batteries in this segment.
