Abstract NEW YORK (Standard & Poor's CreditWire) April 23, 2001--Standard & Poor's today assigned preliminary ratings to Arch Coal Inc.'s $750 million universal shelf. All other ratings are affirmed (see list below). The outlook is stable. Drawdowns under the shelf will be used for general corporate purposes that will include working capital, capital expenditures, stock redemption, repayment of debt or acquisitions. The ratings reflect Arch Coal Inc.'s substantial diversified reserve base consisting of a high percentage of low sulfur/compliance coal deposits and a strong market position in each of the major coal producing regions in North America.
