Abstract
The rating reflects Issaquah, Wash.-based Costco Wholesale Corp.'s strong business profile and only modest financial risk. Costco recorded $76.2 billion in revenue on a trailing-12-month basis as of May 9, 2010. Costco's leading market position is ahead of Sam's Club (a division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.), which recorded $46.7 billion in sales in 2009. Warehouse clubs also compete with other discount formats, such as supercenters, discount department stores, and category killers. The membership warehouse business is a low-margin, high-volume concept with high barriers to entry, but has produced good profitability and cash flow for Costco. In our view, the level of investment needed to build and stock these large-format stores is substantial, discouraging smaller players that lack sufficient financial resources....
