Abstract Standard & Poor's has a relatively favorable view of the Canadian food retail industry, regarding it slightly more positively than that of the U.S. and similarly to that of the U.K. Despite low profitability in this notoriously competitive industry, the strength and scope of the few major players and the absence to date of the supercenter format (a discount department store combined with a grocery store) bode well for reasonably capitalized Canadian supermarkets, at least in the medium term.
