Abstract The creditworthiness of the banking system in Poland (Republic of Poland: foreign currency, BBB+/Negative/A-2; local currency, A/Negative/A-1) has been pressurized over the past two years due to the prolonged weak economic environment. The outlook on the Republic of Poland was revised to negative in June 2003. The banking system is benefiting industrywide from the privatization of several large banks to strategic foreign shareholders; other foreign entrants; and the resultant bank modernization and restructuring programs. Future banking sector performance will depend on sustainable economic recovery, including the privatization and restructuring of politically sensitive industries, and other legislative and social reforms.
