Abstract
Standard & Poor's Ratings Services believes the U.S. midstream energy sector (pipelines, storage, processing) will generally perform well in 2011. In our view, strong crude oil prices are driving higher natural gas liquids (NGL) prices, which are leading to higher cash flows for companies with gathering and processing assets and NGL infrastructure. Midstream companies also are focusing on adding additional fee-based services to mitigate the risk of falling commodity prices. In addition, the wide price differential between Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate crude is resulting in much higher profits for refiners in the Mid-Continent region and a surge in the supply of crude in Cushing, Okla.
