Rating the Transition Economies -- 2001 Apr 01

Abstract
Standard & Poor's currently rates 14 post-Communist countries. It expects to assign new ratings to the debt of several other transition economies within the next couple of years. Eight of the 14 already-rated countries had investment-grade foreign currency sovereign credit ratings at the end of the first quarter of 2001, ranging from 'A' for Slovenia to 'BBB-' for Lithuania and Croatia. The remaining six countries fall into the noninvestment-grade category. Their foreign currency issuer credit ratings range from 'BB+' for the Slovak Republic to 'B-' for the Russian Federation and Romania (see table 1).
