North America Carrier Ethernet Switch/Router Market Update
Frost & Sullivan, June 2011, Pages: 81
Service providers face competition from application providers, such as over-the-top video services providers. Instead of relying entirely on Net Neutrality to work in its favor, service providers are considering new applications that could offer new sources of revenues. How vendors enable service providers overcome this challenge could be an important area of differentiation for vendors. In addition to applications serving as a strong driver, the exponential increase in Internet data and video traffic continues to be inarguably one of the strongest drivers. Hence, scaling of networks is expected to be a strong driver during the forecast period, especially as the service providers have also initiated network upgrade refresh cycle.
Major Research Findings:
- The total North American carrier Ethernet switch/router market was valued $x.xx billion in 2010. This market is expected to grow to $xx.xx billion in 2017.
- Carrier Ethernet demarc accounted for x.x percent of the total revenues in the CESR market in 2010, while carrier Ethernet access accounted for xx.x percent, carrier Ethernet aggregation xx.x percent, and carrier Ethernet service edge xx.x percent of the total revenues.
- Each product segment of the market is driven by all three primary carrier Ethernet applications – business services, triple-play infrastructure, and mobile backhaul.
- In 2010, in North America, the broadband stimulus fund was a strong driver of active Ethernet deployments for triple-play services. In addition, mobile backhaul saw some growth in 2010 with Tier-1 carriers driving the regional carrier build-outs as well as for wholesale services.
- Despite the strong drivers, service providers are confronted with multiple challenges as well. While this may cause delay in deployments in the short-term of the forecast period, some of these challenges are eventually expected to drive revenues.

How vendors enable service providers overcome this challenge could be an important area of differentiation for vendors.
- Product differentiation has, in fact, become an extremely critical aspect among the vendors in this market. In the early stages of the market, standards based solution offered differentiation. Most vendors have evolved their solution to offer advanced quality of service, operations, administration, and maintenance, an end-to-end management system and similar features. Video quality of service, specific features for emerging applications such as machine-to-machine services, and policy-based services are important for vendor to differentiate the solution. - In addition to applications serving as a strong driver, the exponential increase in Internet data and video traffic continues to be inarguably one of the strongest drivers. Hence, scaling of networks is expected to be a strong driver during the forecast period, especially as the service providers have also initiated network upgrade refresh cycle.
