Business Monitor International's Bulgaria Consumer Electronics Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, electronics associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Bulgaria's consumer electronics industry.

Bulgaria’s domestic consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and AV products, is projected to be worth around US$1.3bn in 2011. 2010 was another difficult year for consumer electronics vendors in the Bulgarian market, with sales constrained as a result of the economic situation.

In 2011, we see scope for greater expenditure by households on some consumer electronics devices. Difficult conditions are expected to persist into 2011, but BMI forecasts faster growth from the second half of the year as consumer confidence picks up and credit availability improves. Bulgarian consumer electronics spending is projected to increase at a CAGR of 6.0% to US$1.7bn by 2015, driven by the growing popularity and affordability of digital lifestyle products like notebook computers and flat-screen TV sets.

BMI forecasts Bulgarian domestic market computer hardware sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$741mn in 2011. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2011-2015 period is forecast at about 6.5%. Growth areas in the next few years are expected to include low and mid-range servers, laptops, netbooks and tablets, storage devices and desktop PCs.

AV devices accounted for around 28% of Bulgarian consumer electronics spending in 2010. Growth drivers in BMI’s fiveyear forecast period will include LCD and plasma TV sets, portable media devices and Blu-ray format DVD players, with a CAGR of 5.1% projected for 2011-2015, helped by the country’s move towards digital TV services.

Mobile handset sales accounted for around 17% of Bulgarian consumer electronics spending in 2010. Bulgarian market handset revenues are forecast to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% to US$275mn in 2015 as mobile subscriber penetration reaches 149%. Sales will be dominated by the replacement market, with steadily growing demand for 3G handsets.
