Qatar Consumer Electronics Report Q3 2011
Business Monitor International, June 2011, Pages: 48
Business Monitor International's Qatar Consumer Electronics Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, electronics associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Qatar's consumer electronics industry.
Qatar’s consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and video, audio and gaming products, is projected at about US$481mn in 2011. This is expected to increase to US$612mn by 2015, driven by new technologies and the growing popularity of digital lifestyle products such as LCD TV sets, feature-rich notebook computers and digital cameras as well as other key product groups, and also by ongoing development of the electronics Qatar retail sector.
The addressable market for consumer electronics devices will be driven by a rapidly expanding economy and a projected average population growth rate of 3% over the next five years. An evolving retail landscape will help to stimulate sales of consumer electronics devices, as the market grows at an expected 2011-2015 compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.2%. Other drivers will include product innovation and factors such as increased competition in the mobile communications sector and the rollout of highspend broadband services.
Computer hardware accounted for about 46% of Qatari consumer electronics spending in 2010. BMI forecasts Qatari domestic market computer hardware sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$227mn in 2011, up from US$205mn in 2010. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2011-2015 period is forecast at about 9.4%, with drivers including tenders in sectors such as healthcare and education.
Audio and video (AV) devices accounted for about 37% of Qatari consumer electronics spending in 2010. Qatar’s domestic AV device market is estimated at US$174mn in 2011. The market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 2.4% between 2011 and 2015 to US$191mn by 2015.
Handset sales in Qatar are expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.9% in 2011-2015 to US$96mn by the end of the forecast period. The replacement market will continue to dominate as mobile penetration passes 200% in 2011, and there will be growing demand for smartphones and 3G handsets. Handset sales should receive a boost from increased competition in the mobile communications market. During 2010, Vodafone Qatar promised to launch internet-enabled low-cost handsets, some for as little as US$20, to encourage uptake from lower-income consumers.
