Italy - Broadband Market Insights, Statistics and Forecasts
Paul Budde Communication Pty Ltd, July 2012, Pages: 25
The Italian broadband market has strong competition in the DSL sector, supplemented by a vibrant fibre sector. In the absence of effective cross-platform competition from cable networks, DSL has benefited from the market entry of new players such as Vodafone. Several operators have invested in ADSL2+ and VDSL infrastructure, propelling the market for high-bandwidth bundled services, while Telecom Italia’s newly created Open Access division has aimed to improve competitor access to its networks. Regulatory measures have also been taken to address competitor access to NGNs. This report presents key statistics on the Italian broadband market, including the burgeoning fibre sector. It also assesses the wireless market, detailing the regulatory treatment for WiMAX auctions, and provides broadband forecasts to 2020.
Key developments:
NGN Committee works on open access network, Fastweb, Wind and Vodafone continue with €2.5 billion NGN project; Milan’s Metroweb sold to F2i and IMI Investimenti; TI sets up JV to build open access fibre network covering 80% of buildings in Milan; Fastweb bundles broadband with Sky Italia; Fastweb buys 11% of Metroweb; Metroweb proposes €4,5 billion FttH network covering 30 cities; regulator’s market data to end-2011; telco operating and financial data to March 2012; market developments to mid-2012.
