In the Italian broadband market there remains strong competition within the DSL sector, though the focus in recent years has shifted to the vibrant fibre broadband market, spearheaded by investment efforts from Telecom Italia, other telcos, municipal governments and the government-supported wholesale network provider Open Fiber. Into 2020, discussions continue regarding plans (preferred by the government) to combine the fibre networks of Telecom Italia and Open Fiber, and thus avoid further duplication and unnecessary investment. Open Fiber expected to complete most of its network rollout by the end of 2022.

Regulatory measures have also been introduced to facilitate access to NGNs, while the government, supported by EU funds, is investing to provide broadband across the country as part of its Digital Plan Ultra-broadband initiative.

This report presents key statistics on the Italian broadband market, including the burgeoning fibre sector. It also assesses the wireless market, detailing the regulatory treatment for WiMAX auctions, and providing broadband subscriber forecasts.

Key Developments:
  • WINDTRE extends reach of FttP network;
  • Regulator consults on extending 3.5GHz licenses;
  • Government provides 400 million to connect more than 80% of schools with fibre broadband;
  • TIM and Open Fiber continue with network merger talks;
  • SINFI infrastructure registry helping to reduce cost of deploying fibre by a third;

This report update includes the regulators market data reports to December 2019, telcos operating and financial data to Q1 2020, recent market developments.
