In the Italian broadband market there remains strong competition within the DSL sector, though the focus in recent years has shifted to the vibrant fibre broadband market, spearheaded by investment efforts from Telecom Italia, other telcos, municipal governments and the government-supported wholesale network provider Open Fiber. Into 2020, discussions continue regarding plans (preferred by the government) to combine the fibre networks of Telecom Italia and Open Fiber, and thus avoid further duplication and unnecessary investment. Open Fiber expected to complete most of its network rollout by the end of 2022.
