Nuclear Power in Bulgaria, Market Outlook to 2020, 2011 Update - Capacity, Generation, Regulations, Power Plants, Companies
Summary
Bulgaria has two operational nuclear power reactors generating 14 billion kWh as of 2010. The reactors are of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) type. Nuclear energy plays an important role in the Bulgaria’s electricity generation mix. The nuclear installed capacity as of 2010 was 1,906 MW. And the nuclear power generation represents 36.3% of the country’s total electricity generation. Two nuclear reactors are under construction and one is expected to become operational in 2016 and another in 2017. Kozloduy 1 and Kozloduy 2 were shut down in 2002; Kozloduy 3 and Kozloduy 4 were shut down in 2006. Because of the shutdown of two units in 2002, the nuclear power generation decreased from 19 billion kWh in 2002 to 16 billion kWh in 2003. And due the shutdown of two more reactors in 2006, the nuclear power generation declined from 18 billion kWh in 2006 to 14 billion kWh in 2007. Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund (KIDSF) was set up to aid the decommissioning of Kozloduy 1–4 nuclear power reactors. Kozloduy NPP Plc and Bulgarian National Electricity Company (NEK) (Natsionalna Elektricheska Kompania EAD) are the key players in Bulgaria’s nuclear energy industry.
